How to Locate and Claim the King's Brand in Hollow Knight
To obtain the King's Brand in Hollow Knight, you must travel to the easternmost reaches of the map to a region called Kingdom's Edge. There, you must locate a sub-area known as the Cast-Off Shell, which is the discarded husk of the Great Wyrm. Inside this massive white shell, you will face Hornet for the second time in a challenging boss battle (Hornet Sentinel). After defeating her, you continue to the back of the shell to pick up the King's Brand, an item that marks you as the new ruler of Hallownest and allows access to the sealed door at the bottom of the Ancient Basin leading to the Abyss.
Necessary Preparations Before Heading to Kingdom's Edge
Securing the King's Brand is not a mid-game task you can easily stumble upon. It requires specific abilities and a certain level of combat readiness. While experienced players can sequence-break parts of the game, the standard progression path involves several critical steps.
Acquiring the Monarch Wings
In most playthroughs, the Monarch Wings (the double-jump ability) are essential for reaching the King's Brand. The entrance to the Cast-Off Shell is guarded by high ledges and strong upward winds that make standard jumping impossible.
To get the Monarch Wings, you must first defeat the Broken Vessel in the Ancient Basin. This boss is a corrupted version of the Knight and requires agility to overcome. During our testing, we found that using the Defender's Crest charm is highly effective here, as the toxic cloud automatically clears the small Infected Balloons that spawn during the fight, allowing you to focus entirely on the boss's movements. Once the Broken Vessel falls, you can proceed further left to find the Monarch Wings.
Upgrading the Nail
The fight for the King's Brand is significantly harder than the first encounter with Hornet in Greenpath. We strongly recommend having at least a Channelled Nail (requires one Pale Ore and 800 Geo) or, ideally, a Coiled Nail (requires two Pale Ore and 2,000 Geo). Hornet Sentinel has roughly 800 HP, and a weak nail will make the battle an grueling test of endurance where mistakes become inevitable.
Recommended Charm Build
Before entering the Cast-Off Shell, stop at a bench to optimize your charms. A balanced build for this stage of the game typically includes:
- Mark of Pride: The extra reach is vital for hitting Hornet without getting caught in her close-range needle spins.
- Quick Focus: Hornet moves incredibly fast in this encounter. Having the ability to heal faster during her brief staggers is often the difference between victory and death.
- Stalwart Shell: This increases your invincibility frames after taking damage, preventing Hornet from "combo-ing" you against the arena walls.
Finding the Route to Kingdom's Edge
Kingdom's Edge is a vertical, ash-covered wasteland located on the far right of Hallownest. There are three primary ways to enter this region, depending on your current progress.
The King's Station Route
This is the most common path. From the King's Station stag way in the City of Tears, head to the right into the large flooded room. Near the top right of this chamber, there is a broken wall leading to a secret passage. Swim across the water, and you will emerge into the lower sections of Kingdom's Edge. This area is filled with Primal Aspids and Great Hoppers, so stay alert.
The Royal Waterways Shortcut
If you have already explored the Royal Waterways, you can head east past the area where you fight Flukemarm. There is a path that leads directly into the bottom-right corner of Kingdom's Edge. This route is useful if you are coming from the Ancient Basin after getting the Monarch Wings.
The Tram Route
If you have the Tram Pass (found in the Failed Tramway in Deepnest), you can take the tram from the Resting Grounds or Deepnest to the Kingdom's Edge station. This drops you off in the mid-section of the region, near the Colosseum of Fools.
Navigating the Dangers of Kingdom's Edge
Kingdom's Edge is one of the most hostile environments in the game. Before you reach the King's Brand, you must survive the climb.
Dealing with Primal Aspids
The Primal Aspid is widely considered one of the most frustrating enemies in Hollow Knight. Unlike standard Aspids, they fire three projectiles in a spread pattern. In our experience, the best way to handle them is to use Great Slash (if you have learned the Nail Art) or a well-timed Vengeful Spirit/Shade Soul. Do not try to dodge between the projectiles; instead, move vertically or dash through the gaps before the spread widens too much.
The Great Hoppers
These massive creatures track your movement and leap toward you. The most effective strategy is to "under-cut" them. As they jump toward you, walk slightly under them and slash upward. They have a predictable rhythm, so once you find the timing, you can take them down without moving much.
Reaching the Cast-Off Shell
Once you are in Kingdom's Edge, your goal is to head to the far eastern side. Look for the bench located near the top of the region, close to the Colosseum of Fools. From there, head down and to the right.
You will eventually encounter a long corridor filled with white ash falling from the sky. This ash is actually the molted skin of the Great Wyrm. Follow the path to the right until you reach a massive, curved white structure that dwarfs the surrounding landscape. This is the Cast-Off Shell.
The "Nail-Bounce" Sequence Break
For those who want to get the King's Brand early without the Monarch Wings, there is a legendary trick involving a Primal Aspid. Near the entrance to the Cast-Off Shell, there is a gap that is too wide for a standard dash. However, if you lure a Primal Aspid to the edge of the gap, you can jump, dash, and then perform a downward strike (pogo) on the Aspid or its projectile to refresh your dash and reach the other side. This is difficult to pull off but allows for very early game progression.
The Hornet Sentinel Boss Fight
Upon entering the shell, the atmosphere shifts. You will find Hornet waiting for you. She is there to test if you have the will to take on the mantle of King and face the truths of the Abyss.
Phase 1: Familiar Patterns
In the early part of the fight, Hornet uses moves similar to her Greenpath encounter but at a much higher speed.
- Lunge: She dashes across the ground with her needle. Jump and down-slash for a free hit.
- Aerial Dash: She aims for your current position from the air. A well-timed side dash is the best defense.
- Gossamer Storm: She spins her silk in a wide radius around her. Stay back and use this time to cast a spell like Vengeful Spirit if you have Soul to spare.
Phase 2: The Spike Traps
When Hornet reaches approximately 50% health, she introduces a new mechanic: silk spikes. She will suspend several spiked balls in the air throughout the arena. These do not move, but they severely limit your mobility.
In our playthroughs, we found that leaving these spikes on the screen is a recipe for disaster. You must clear them immediately. A single nail strike or a shockwave from a spell will destroy them. Don't wait for her to fill the screen; clear a "safe zone" for yourself as soon as she places them.
When to Heal
Healing during this fight is risky. The safest times to heal are:
- When she is staggered (hunched over). You can usually get two heals off.
- During her Gossamer Storm, but only if you are already at the far end of the arena.
- When she throws her needle across the room. If you are far enough away, you can jump over the needle and heal while it is returning to her.
Claiming the King's Brand
Once Hornet is defeated, she will not die. Instead, she acknowledges your strength and leaves. Proceed to the right, deeper into the heart of the shell. You will see a glowing, intricate mark on the wall. This is the King's Brand.
When you interact with it, a cinematic triggers. The mark is burned onto the Knight's shell. Hallownest recognizes its new ruler. Immediately after this, the Cast-Off Shell begins to collapse. You will wake up outside the shell, where Hornet saves you from being buried under the debris. She will provide some cryptic dialogue about the path ahead and the choice you must make.
What to Do After Getting the King's Brand
The King's Brand is not a piece of equipment; it is a permanent mark. Its primary function is to open the "Ancient Gate" in the Ancient Basin.
Entering the Abyss
Travel back to the Ancient Basin. From the Hidden Station or the Broken Vessel arena, head to the very bottom of the region. You will find a massive door carved with a seal that matches the mark on your shell. As you approach, the door will glow and slowly open.
Inside lies the Abyss, the most lore-heavy and atmospheric area in the game. This is the birthplace of the Knight and the other Vessels.
Obtaining the Shade Cloak
The most important item within the Abyss is the Shade Cloak. To get it, you must descend to the bottom of the chasm, cross a sea of Void (which requires you to activate a lighthouse on the eastern side to calm the Void tendrils), and reach the Void fountain. The Shade Cloak upgrades your Mothwing Cloak, allowing you to dash through enemies and black "Shadow Gates" without taking damage.
The Path to Multiple Endings
Acquiring the King's Brand is a non-negotiable step for reaching four out of the five possible endings in Hollow Knight. Without the brand, you cannot enter the Abyss, which means you cannot get the Void Heart. The Void Heart is the charm that changes the Knight's nature and determines the final confrontation in the Black Egg Temple.
NPC Interactions and Dialogue Changes
One of the most rewarding aspects of getting the King's Brand is seeing how the world of Hallownest reacts to your new status. Several NPCs have unique dialogue for the "New King."
- Bardoon: The giant caterpillar in Kingdom's Edge will recognize the "mark of Wyrm" you bear and offer deep lore regarding the Pale King's transformation.
- The White Lady: Located in the Queen's Gardens, she will acknowledge your mark and provide the first half of the Kingsoul charm.
- Midwife: In Deepnest, she will comment on your relationship to "the gendered child" (Hornet) and the mark you carry.
- Mask Maker: This mysterious NPC in the Fog Canyon/Deepnest border will discuss the burden of the mantle you have taken up.
Summary of the Journey
Getting the King's Brand is a turning point in Hollow Knight. It marks the transition from being a simple wanderer to becoming a central figure in the fate of the kingdom. The journey requires you to master the platforming of Kingdom's Edge and the high-speed combat of the Hornet Sentinel fight. Once you have the brand, the entire "Void" side of the game opens up, leading you toward the true conclusion of the story.
FAQ
Can I get the King's Brand without fighting Hornet? No. The boss fight with Hornet Sentinel is the mandatory gatekeeper for the item. There is no way to bypass her within the Cast-Off Shell.
I have the King's Brand, but the door in the Ancient Basin won't open. Why? Make sure you are at the very bottom of the Ancient Basin. There are several doors in that region, but the one for the King's Brand is a massive stone gate with the Wyrm's seal. If you are at the correct door, simply standing near it should trigger the opening animation.
Is Kingdom's Edge the final area of the game? Not necessarily. While it contains late-game content, many players visit it before completing other areas like the Queen's Gardens or the Hive. However, the King's Brand is usually one of the last key items players collect before the finale.
What happens if I die after picking up the brand but before the shell collapses? The game saves as soon as you pick up the King's Brand. If you die during the collapse sequence, you will respawn at the last bench you sat at with the Brand already in your inventory.
Do I need the King's Brand for the "Hollow Knight" ending? Technically, no. You can complete the game by defeating the three Dreamers and the final boss without ever setting foot in the Abyss. However, you will miss a large portion of the game's story and the "true" endings.
What is the best way to clear the spikes Hornet throws? The Vengeful Spirit or Shade Soul spell is the most efficient way to clear multiple spikes at once. If you prefer to save Soul, a single nail strike on each ball is sufficient. During our testing, we found that focusing on clearing spikes during Hornet's needle-throw animation is the safest strategy.
How do I get back up from the Abyss after the door opens? The door remains open permanently once you have used the King's Brand. You can leave the Abyss by climbing back up the central shaft or using the stag way in the Hidden Station once you've climbed out of the chasm.
By following this path, you will successfully claim the King's Brand and unlock the deepest secrets of Hallownest. The transition from Kingdom's Edge to the Abyss is one of the most iconic sequences in the game, providing both mechanical upgrades and profound narrative revelations.
